Mekong Boat Races

Date: Tuesday 7th February 2012

Boat races between teams from Thailand, Lao PDR, China and Myanmar are held annually on the Mekong River at Chiang Saen. This is part of the Songkran  (Thai New Year) celebrations on 13-15 April.

The waterfront seating offers a great view up the Mekong to the start point. A shady tree provides some respite from the 38c heat…

Carnivals, cultural shows, street stalls and beauty contests to crown the Queen of the Golden Triangle are amongst the  activities that draw visitors from far and wide.

Along the riverfront , and on Main Street, its busy!

There are packed riverside tent restaurants with sitting room only  – its hot and the beer flows freely!
